Information Literacy in the First-Year Experience

The PCCC Student Body

Passaic County Community College (PCCC) enrolls nearly 7,000 students a semester in over 40 Associate degree, certificate, and diploma programs plus an extensive program of English as a Second Language (ESL), continuing education, and customized training.

The main PCCC campus is located in Paterson, an urban multicultural center of 150,000 located in northern New Jersey, about 15 miles west of New York City. PCCC also has a small satellite campus in suburban Wanaque.

The majority of students (70%) at PCCC are enrolled part-time. The student body at PCCC is roughly 50% Hispanic and 22% African-American. There are also significant minority populations of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Eastern European descent. The median age of all students is 26.

Approximately 42% of first-year students are enrolled in the ESL program. A significant number of first-year students are enrolled in Developmental Writing (45%), Reading (43%), and Math (55%) classes. ESL and Developmental sequences must be completed before students can enroll in college-level courses.
