The PCCC Women’s Basketball team was selected by the NJCAA Region XIX Awards Committee as recipients of the 2009-2010 Region XIX “Champions of Character” team award in recognition of their efforts last season on behalf of the WBCA Pink Zone®, an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball on campuses and in communities.
Last February, the PCCC Lady Panthers held a “Pink Zone” fundraising event, participating in the nationwide 2009 campaign that raised over $1.3 million.
The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, named in honor of a former women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University who died in 2006 from breast cancer.
“The Lady Panthers’ commitment to community service throughout the 2009-2010 year, topped off by their notable efforts to raise funds for “Kay Yow” breast cancer research is commendable,” said PCCC Athletic Director Bernard Johnson. “This is a very prestigious award and proves our athletes do more than play sports. We are teaching them the value of service, and they have learned. I am very proud of our Lady Panthers and coaching staff.”
